Hints For Success

Hints For Success Cover
Success in spellcrafting, as with any art, comes from practice and patience.
Medieval monks didn't learn to brew world-renowned beverages overnight, nor did da Vinci create a masterpiece without making some mistakes. So, be patient with yourself in honing your magical arts and follow these suggestions to help get over the rough spots:

Bring as many of your senses into the magical procedure as possible to clarify and delineate its purpose(s).

Always visualize your intentions in detail while you work.

Repeat spells whenever you feel the need. Each reiteration provides supportive energy for manifestation.

Phrase the verbal component to be geared toward your specific intentions.

If you are uncomfortable with vocalizing spells, you can mentally recite them just as effectively. Remember, thoughts are words uttered inwardly.

Eliminate, substitute, or augment any prop/focal you desire.

Be certain to maintain the congruity of meaning.

Use the timing as a guideline, not as an edict. Any time is the right time for magic!

Make notes of your successes and failures. These memos will prove immensely helpful in the future.

It is not necessary to use all the props and focals listed in devising your spell. In fact, trying to do so would probably make the spell unmanageable (unless you have three hands). Choose only those items that intimately sym- bolize your goals, and that you feel are necessary to the spell's construction.

Stone Protection Spell
Lisa Barkley
Stone Protection Spell Cover
Every home can benefit from protection. This spell employs one of nature's sturdiest objects, a stone. Choose a plain rock at least as big as your fist. Set it on your altar between a bowl of salt and a bowl of water. Behind these, light a black candle.

Sprinkle the stone with salt, saying: " I consecrate this stone with the purifying power of "

Sprinkle it with water, saying: " I consecrate this stone with the cleansing power of "

Pass it over the flame, saying: " I consecrate this stone with the attraction of flame to "

Finally, trace the image of an eye on the stone with your finger, and say" watch and guard around my home,

I invoke the strength of stone.

All evil thoughts be drawn within:

Strike here and leave me alone!

Blow out the candle; empty the salt and water outside. Keep the rock near your door. Once a month, when the moon is new, bring the stone doors. With an attitude of gratitude, lovingly wash the stone in warm soapy water to cleanse it, rinse it in warm salt water to purify it, and then with your finger retrace the eye on the stone and repeat the invocation. Return the stone to it's place by the door.

A Spell For Protection Against Any Evil
Lisa Barkley
A Spell For Protection Against Any Evil Cover

You Need:

Your Staff/wand
Silver or blue shiny glitter
A quiet place- best outdoors

You will need your staff (or wand) for this spell. It is
best if the staff used is blue, white of silver- The easiest
way to achieve this is to bind a ribbon, or ribbons, of the
color around it for the spell. This means you can
remove them afterwards.
1. It is best to go outside for this spell, as the air
movement will help disperse the glitter, and the magick.
2. Cast a circle, or create a sacred space.
3. Go to each quarter in turn (start with the West, then
North, East and south
), and pound or tap the ground with
your staff/wand chanting:
“I call thee, you who guard the watchtowers of the
(direction) to guide me through the darkness, and ensure
my safety”. Do this for all 4 quarters.
4. Stand in the center and say,
“In the shadows, evils hide,
Ready to draw me from love’s side,
But with your help I shall be strong
And banish all that do me wrong
Send them away, send them astray
Never again to pass my way,
So mote it be”
As you say the last 3 lines, scatter the glitter in a circle
around you.
5. Close the circle, and have something to eat to restore
your energies!

Power Animals Totem Animals And Spirit Animals
Lisa Barkley
Power Animals Totem Animals And Spirit Animals Cover
The use of a totem animal is not part of traditional Wiccan practice. However, as Wicca and other modern Pagan practices evolve and blend together, many people who follow non-mainstream spiritual paths find themselves working with a mix of many different belief systems. Because of this, someone following a Native American or Indo-European shamanic path might find themselves working with totem animals. While totem animals or power animals have nothing to do with the Wiccan religion, some people do incorporate them into non-Wiccan shamanic practices.

It should be pointed out that sometimes, the use of totem animals and other Native American practices is sometimes seen as cultural appropriation when it's done by non-Native American individuals. Some European shamanic systems do connect with animal spirits, but the use of the specific word "totem" implies a Native American connection. It has a very specific, anthropological meaning, and chances are that if you have made a spiritual connection with an animal entity, it does not qualify as a true "totem." Be cautious what you call your beliefs, because you may find yourself taking ownership of a heritage that's not actually yours to claim. If you're not Native American, but are practicing some other form of shamanism, you may want to consider using the term "power animal" or even "spirit animal" instead.

A power animal is a spiritual guardian that some people connect with. However, much like other spiritual entities, there's no rule or guideline that says you must have one. If you happen to connect with an animal entity while meditating or performing astral travel, then that may be your power animal… or it may just be curious about what you're up to. Our Guide to Healing, Phylameana lila Desy, has a great piece on different types of animal totems and what they mean: Animal Totems.

Unfortunately, as often is seen in the Pagan community, many times the connection to a power animal is simply the result of wishful thinking. When someone tells you they have a spirit animal, they'll almost always tell you it's the bear, the eagle, or the wolf. Why? Because these are animals that exemplify the characteristics we'd really like to see in ourselves -- we want to be strong and formidable like Bear, independent and mysterious like Wolf, or all-seeing like Eagle. No one will every tell you their "totem animal" is the wombat, the hedgehog, or the three-toed sloth.

There are a number of books available that discuss the spiritual nature of animals. Nearly all will tell you to "choose" your spirit animal based upon which animals you want to see first at the zoo or which ones you just find really interesting. Generally, in true shamanic practice, one meets their power animal through meditation or a vision quest. Often, it's an animal you never expected to encounter. If you are fortunate enough to have this take place, do some research on the animal you've connected with, and find out why that particular creature has attached itself to you. Animals have different symbolism in different cultures and societies. Take the time to do some research, and you may end up learning something new about yourself.

Opening The Circle
Lisa Barkley
Opening The Circle Cover
The High Priestess goes to each of the four directions in turn, and draws a Banishing Pentacle, saying,

Guardians of the East (South, West, North), Powers of Air , (Fire, Water, Earth),

We thank you
For joining in our circle
And we ask for your blessing
As you depart
May there be peace between us
Now and forever. Blessed be.
She raises her athame to the sky and touches it to the earth, then opens her arms and says,

The circle is open, but unbroken,
May the peace of the Goddess
Go in your hearts,
Mercy meet, and merry part.
And merry meet again. Blessed be.

To watching winds we wish fair traveling;
To sleepless dead sweet rest we send;
Gods and Goddesses, go with praises --
See: the circle is severed thus. [cut with sword at east]
